The D. A. Tompkins Memorial Library is the official visitors center of Edgefield and is operated by the Edgefield Civic League. The library averages about 2,000 visitors a year from around 40 states and several foreign countries. Not only does the Welcome Center provide maps, books, and souvenirs, but also information about businesses, services, and activities in Edgefield. The Center also offers information on our unique history, which is a great drawing card to this area.
The library is also the headquarters of the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society and the South Carolina Genealogical Society. Visitors who are here to do research on the history of our area or its people always find able assistance and valuable materials. They also organize an annual Southern Studies Showcase each September with a variety of speakers and events surrounding historic and genealogical research. These valuable and attractive services promote Edgefield and draw many people to this area. The library is located at 104 Courthouse Square and is open six days a week.
