The public is cordially invited to the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society (OEDGS) meeting on Sunday, May 19th, at 3:00 p. m., in the Lynch Building Annex of the Tompkins Library, 104 Courthouse Square, Edgefield. The guest speaker will be Commander Tommy Strother, LCDR (ret.) USN, who will give a presentation on the history of American Legion Hezzie Griffis Post #30, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. The Post is named after Hezzie Griffis, an Edgefield County soldier killed during World War I. Commander Strother will also provide many details of Edgefield County’s World War I military veterans.
Commander Strother, who has deep roots in Edgefield County, is a researcher/writer and contributor of the wonderful weekly articles in The Edgefield Advertiser, titled “REMEMBERING WORLD WAR I – From Advertiser Issues 100 Years Ago.” His talents and skills come from studies in history and years of teaching history at the Naval Academy. He also possesses esteemed military credentials. In all, he is an interesting Great War historian, whose Edgefield grandfather was a veteran.
Attendees are encouraged to bring soldier artifacts of World War I to share with the audience.
Please make plans to attend. Refreshments will be served.
