A book signing will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Tompkins Library, 104 Courthouse Square, from 2:00 p. m. to 5:00 p. m. for Mr. Tom Poland. Mr. Poland is the author of thirteen books and more than 1,200 magazine features and columns. A Southern writer, his work has appeared in magazines throughout the South. He grew up in Lincoln County, Georgia. People first came to know his work in South Carolina Wildlife magazine, where he wrote features and served as managing editor.
He will be presenting on and signing his new book, South Carolina Country Roads: Of Train Depots, Filling Stations and Other Vanishing Charms. Speaking about his new book, Mr. Poland said “I drove over 10,000 miles avoiding the interstates. I’d pick an obscure spot on the map and hit the road. The stories and photos I collected evolved into South Carolina Country Roads, A Place Called Obscurity. Among the places I ended up: a ferry to two wild islands, a ghost town, Edgefield’s Camellia Tea, an old car dealership of the 1930s that’s become a legendary eatery—Harold’s Country Club in Yemassee, and a community of the 1930s.”
